Raoul Thomas Moat (17 June 1973 – 10 July 2010) was a British fugitive and former nightclub doorman who became the subject of a major police manhunt in July 2010. This followed his release from prison and subsequent shooting of three people.
Moat's actions unfolded after his release from HM Prison Durham. He targeted his ex-girlfriend, Samantha Stobbart, and her new partner, Christopher Brown, fatally shooting Brown and seriously wounding Stobbart. He also shot and seriously injured police officer David Rathband.
The subsequent manhunt involved significant resources from Northumbria Police and attracted widespread media attention. During the search, Moat released statements criticizing the police and social services. He was eventually cornered in Rothbury, Northumberland, after a week on the run.
Following a six-hour standoff with armed police, Moat shot himself and was later pronounced dead at a hospital. The incident raised several questions about domestic abuse, access to firearms, and the role of media during police operations. The involvement of former footballer Paul Gascoigne, who claimed to know Moat and tried to intervene, also became a talking point.
